Conscious Bands

I’d thought I’d write a short blog about Conscious Bands, which are an important factor in Leech Mob: A Novel about a Connecticut Gang.  A Conscious Band is a necklace, usually with a round, leather medallion with the continent of Africa in the middle.  They are striped black, green, yellow and red which are popular colors for African flags and have different meanings behind them. Conscious Bands represented a Free South Africa-- or being conscious to the struggle that was happening in South Africa.

Conscious Bands became popular in the late 80’s and early 90’s when many hip-hop artists also wore them.  People could find them in many African imports shops in the 90’s but in 2012, searches for the phrase Conscious Bands turned up very little information and images for them.  Now, at the end of days, it will be Andrew who will be held responsible for the Conscious Band Incident. In Leech Mob, Andrew introduces Conscious Bands to Kelly who goes on to wear one, which sparks some controversy among the different gangs.
