To Fight Or Not To Fight

John Harwood

In Leech Mob: A Novel about a Connecticut Gang,  the topic of bullies and standing up to bullies runs through the book.  Upon moving and going to a new school, Kelly first has problems with a gang of Jocks. So the readers can ask themselves, “Did Kelly deal with the situation the right way?” and "What other ways could he have dealt with the situation?"  By choosing to fight back, Kelly made a few enemies; however, by choosing to fight back, he also gained a little self-confidence.
A gang of Skaters and then, the Leech Mob approach Kelly next. At these points, is Kelly handling bullies in a different manner?  The reader can experience how different gangs of kids handle problems with each other.  After Kelly starts hanging out with The Leech Mob, they all have trouble with the Jocks - an older gang of football players, and then later with the Empire State Skinheads, and last with Hilltop Posse.  How these kids handle problems with each other is intriguing to read. We find it might be best not to fear the other groups but to approach each other in a more bold and, sometimes, good-natured spirit.

Handling Bullies

In Leech Mob,
bullying is a big topic so I wanted to write a blog for some of you kids who are still in school on how to defend yourselves against bullies.  From my experience, most bullies enjoy psychologically torturing people.  Rarely do bullies walk over and proceed directly to the fight.  The whole act of picking on someone is the process of mentally torturing them. This is the way the bully enjoys itself

Fighting attracts the attention of teachers and the authorities, so there are often consequences.  Most bullies would like to avoid suspensions and legal problems so they can go on to a long career of bullying others!  With that being said, we realize that a bully will look for those who will stand there quietly without doing much to defend him or herself.  When confronted by a bully, many kids will react with the “deer in the headlights look". That is, not knowing how to respond to a cruel threat, the target will stand there almost frozen, staring at the bully and taking the abuse.  Then they get themselves locked into a situation they see no way out of, which can become an everyday routine.

Even though the solution might seems obvious when explained, it takes some effort to practice.

Rule # 1 Don’t stand there and let the bully close in on you.
If you see a bully closing in, don’t wait for them and definitely don’t stop for them.  I don’t know how many times a gang of kids will look for someone to pick on and this happens to be whoever stops to give the bullies the time of day. Before you came by, dozens of kids have walked by, ignoring the bullies.  If the bully tries to get in their way, they quickly walk around the bully or shrug them off with a stern, “GET A LIFE, LOSER!” and go on with their life without any further problems from that bully.  So most bullies look for those who will let themselves be picked on.  So don’t meet the bully halfway!

RULE # 2 - USE YOUR VOICE. If a bully rolls up on you first try to ignore them and walk away. Then don't respond to their wisecracks, their questions, their commands and definitely don't give them any of your attention. Yet if they keep following you around, simply tell them, "GET OUT OF HERE!" in a loud and clear voice and then walk away!  This lets the bully know that you are not afraid of speaking up and you are not going to stand around and let them harass you.

If you are at a bus stop or in the schoolyard and they keep following you around...tell them to "LEAVE ME THE HELL ALONE!" and then find an activity to do and just ignore the jerks  Go back to talking to your friends, read your copy of Leech Mob or do the homework you forgot to do the night before.  After the bully sees that you are not going to react the way they want you to - with fear or with your full and undivided attention, the bully will lose interest.

Leech Mob, A Novel About a Connecticut Gang, is a book about the toughest years of a kids life, especially as far as bullying is concerned.  High School is a time for a lot of fun and when young people really begin to discover who they are; so don't let one or two jerks bring you down...the Leech Mob definitely wont stand for it!  Read about all the crazy ways this gang of kids stood up for themselves, from pranks, to brawls to negotiations, The Leech Mob is here to stay!

The Bully or the Victim: Leech Mob Novel Questions School Profiling

More than 4,000 teens commit suicide each year because of bullying. Sure, it’s great advice for youths to talk to their parents, teachers, and even the police if they are victims of bullying and school violence. But most kids don't want to admit they’ve been bullied because they feel embarrassed, so they keep quiet. Leech Mob: A Novel about a Connecticut Gang by John Harwood shows how the main character Kelly Hayes chooses to fight back against the bullies, who, in his case, are star students, teachers, administration, and cops.

The novel is set in the early 1990s, before the long term effects of bullying on the victim were acknowledged. Kelly's teachers look the other way, the school administrators do not investigate complaints, and even the city cops “profile” youths before the term was ever used.  Kelly keeps the bullying a secret from his mother, a common response in teens, so she is unaware of the actual problems he faces. He believes that fighting is his only option, and he becomes a problem that the system wants to eliminate.

Leech Mob: A Novel about a Connecticut Gang is pure entertainment

Hey Guys,
After 8 years of writing Leech Mob: A Novel about a Connecticut Gang, I believe that it’s finally ready for ya! I promise you, your high school teachers will hate it –which means they’ll never assign you Leech Mob homework, so you have to be daring enough to read it on your own
But what’s the novel about, you ask?  Basically kids torturing each other.  We do what we do best.  We get into street fights, we pull school pranks, we go to cool raves.  You’ll learn how to make poon-tang–not what you think.  Wait!  I think I should say here that you shouldn’t try anything that you read in this novel.  We got arrested a bunch of times–not good on the old college application!  So, this ain’t your regular novel.

Leech Mob Novel Appeals to Teens and to Reluctant Readers

Even though the school system tried to kill me, I survived because our gang was a cool bunch of friends who always had each other’s back in an otherwise unfriendly world. Leech Mob: A Novel about a Connecticut Gang is the wisdom about growing up that I was able to get across enemy lines.  I leave it in the hands of you kids now, so start reading!
What? You don’t like reading books?  Well, neither do I if you’re talking about most of the boring novels we were assigned to read in high school. But Leech Mob is altogether different.  It’s about high school kids who are experimenting with being adults.  We make lots of mistakes, but our lives go on.  Yep, there is some violence in the book, but the fights are real rather than glorified.  No one walks away a hero, and not everyone walks away.

Being the new kid in high school, Kelly Hayes fights the bullies in Leech Mob Novel

It’s not easy being the new kid – especially when you’re new to high school and everyone has known each other - like - since the first grade. I know - cause I was in that predicament myself.   I had barely stepped off the school bus when I was in a fight on the first day of school. But the teachers didn’t want to spend any time investigating the incident.  They just assumed that I caused it rather than the school’s elite - a bunch of preps, jocks, and honor roll kids.  It’s weird how a thing like that can seem to go on for rest of your life! So read the book and decide if you agree or not.

Leech Mob: A Novel about a Connecticut Gang author biography of John Harwood

I was born in New York and moved to Connecticut at the start of high school, graduating after a series of stints at various schools. I then attended a semester here or a year there at several New England universities, struggling with the normalcy of traditional conventions. But it’s high school that left lasting impressions. As with all of us, these were growing years, learning about myself and others, exploring what life is about, pushing the boundaries society puts on us, and learning where I fit––and often DIDN’T FIT––in the grand scheme of American society.
Taking artistic license to the limit with the wild parties, the high school pranks, the underground music scene, brushes with the law and, of course, the brawls! I wanted to write a book that young people would have fun reading. As a kid, I loved books, but was turned off to reading during high school because the novels were totally irrelevant to my life. So I decided to start with the important social issues of growing up––with a bunch of crazy and often painful stories about teenage kids. The end result was  Leech Mob: A Novel about a Connecticut Gang.

I want the youth to know that I love them and I wrote this book for them. Hopefully, they will benefit from the experiences of Kelly Hayes.
